Description

Most of us have a sense that there may be more out there than only what we can see or touch—not necessarily a God but something. You could call this intuition "somethingism." Some who believe this would also say they are “spiritual but not religious.”

This book offers those with this sense of belief in “something” the opportunity to begin to explore faith. Imaginative and thoughtful chapters consider the possibility that the sense of something out there correlates to a someone who not only exists but can be encountered and known in the person of Jesus.

A fresh approach to evangelism that particularly resonates with younger generations, this book is great to read individually, with a friend, or over four sessions in a group. There are questions to fuel reflection and discussion.

Professor and Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics, Palm Beach Atlantic University

Luke Cawley’s book—one that needed to be written—points to the reality of a metaphysically haunted universe, and he invites us to explore what that is all about. Human beings commonly report about signs and indicators and their intuitions of an inescapable Something that is ‘out there’, and Cawley reminds us that this Something—the God who reveals himself in Jesus Christ—is not far from each one of us.

Jeff Hoffmeyer

Adjunct Professor, Fuller Theological Seminary

Raw. Honest. Real. With unflinching authenticity, Luke Cawley guides readers through his own journey from ‘something’ to ‘Someone’, simultaneously inviting an exploration of God.

Dan Paterson

Apologist; Speaker; Author, Questioning Christianity

No doubt all of us at times have an inkling that beyond the material and mundane features of life, perhaps even infused within them, lies something else. For those who are pilgrims on the search for meaning, or who are stumbling after God, Somethingism offers an earthy apologetic for taking a second look at the Christian story. Creatively written, and insightfully journeying through the realms of reason, intuition, and desire, Somethingism is a must-read for those trying to make sense of life’s deepest questions.

“From Curiosity to Conversation”

Somethingism by Luke Cawley takes readers on a fascinating journey of exploring the sense that there is “something more” to life. Cawley skillfully argues that this longing or intuition is not merely about a vague force or feeling—but rather a Someone—and that someone is the Son of God.

This book is especially powerful for those who identify as “spiritual but not religious.” It creates a thoughtful bridge between curiosity and conviction, gently guiding readers from abstract spirituality to a personal encounter with the Christian faith.

Invitation, Not Intimidation

Cawley writes with both urgency and humility. His tone is engaging and respectful, never condescending or preachy. His passion for the subject matter is clear, and his persuasive style invites rather than pressures.

What stood out most to me was the first half of the book, where Cawley explores the possibility that God is not distant or detached, but is actually the one pursuing us. The idea that God moves toward us, initiating relationship, is both comforting and compelling.

From Curiosity to Conversation

In the second half, Cawley shifts focus to Christ. He poses deeply personal questions—if God were reaching out to you, how would you respond? What would you say? What would you ask? He encourages readers to turn to Scripture as a way to begin this honest conversation with God.

This is a thoughtful and timely book to share with friends who are open to exploring faith. If someone in your life is asking big questions or is intrigued by your belief in God, Somethingism is a great next step in that journey.

I received a media copy of Somethingism and this is my honest review.

“Great evangelism tool”

📚About the Book…
This book is an invitation to begin exploring that sense of something more. Many of us who have become Christians later in life, have at one time or another, experienced that sense of something more; the thought, longing, or hopeful idea that there is more than meets the eye to this life. That maybe we are more than a mere chance or coincidence, or the world and our lives within it, do in fact, have meaning.

Drawing on the author’s conversations about meaning and faith with hundreds of spiritually curious people, Crawley explores this “somethingism” from a biblical perspective in a creative and insightful way.

✨This book might be for you if…
You’re exploring Christianity or have family and friends questioning the world or exploring other religions and world views.

“good intro for non believers”

This is a book specifically written for non-believers - those who are wondering if there is something more to life, what it is, and how to get it.

Cawley presents his personal journey of wrestling with somethingism to encourage others in the same journey. Although this concept is not new to me, but the fact that sociologists and others have given it an official name (somethingism) was quite an interesting fact!

Now, of course, this somethingism doesn't necessarily have to do with God or a higher power. But rather the intuition that there is "something" bigger, grander, better, more than what we are currently living. Thankfully, Cawley does a wonderful job of connecting that "something" to Christ.

The book is structured with eight chapters and two additional sections:

- Exploring Further: this section provides additional resources - movies, tv series, books - to continue exploring the "something" of Jesus Christ

- Notes on Using End of Chapter Questions: each chapter concludes with three reflection questions. This section gives some pointers on how to use these questions to the best possible way for each particular reader.

I absolutely love the cover!

I have no doubt that every believer has someone in their life that could benefit from reading this book, discovering and seeking how Jesus has revealed himself to us.

I received a copy of this book from The Good Book Company in exchange for an honest review.

“Brilliant introduction to faith”

Luke Cawley fills a gap in this brilliant book. There are plenty of good books out there for people who are close to faith. In this book, Luke starts further back, aiming at a person who might just be starting to wonder if there is something more, someone more, some sort of divine being. He interweaves his own very honest story into his thinking and takes the reader on a journey, not merely to being more certain that there is a God, but that this God has revealed himself in Jesus, and that we can actually have a real dynamic relationship with this God. What's more, the book is so well written in a very contemporary way. I already have a few people in mind that I'd like to give this book to.
